Larry Moore, The Magic Man, joins the “Make a Splash” Summer Reading Program celebration with his Beach Bash magic and comedy show. Here, he poses with a young victim – er, fan – during his show at Springville Road Public Library on Wednesday, June 2.

Moore has been performing and entertaining children of all ages with magic and comedy for more than 40 years. (Yes, he’s OLD.) He is able to get children laughing, moving, dancing, and captivated (a feat in itself).

The Springville Road Children's Department is getting ready for the Summer Reading Program: "Make a Splash." Join us on June 1, when we kick off our Summer Reading Program. You can also sign up at your local BPL branch.

The Summer Reading Program is a literacy campaign established by the Collaborative Summer Library Program, in conjuction with public libraries throughout the United States.

New York Jets wide receiver, Jerricho Cotchery, and his wife Mercedes visited the Avondale and Smithfield Branch libraries today. Jerricho shared his story about growing up in Birmingham and how he made it to the NFL. Lots of young people were present at both locations and were inspired to set goals and work towards their personal dreams.

The Birmingham Public Library participated in the Birmingham Park and Recreation Annual Fishing Rodeo at East Lake Park on Saturday, June 6, 2009. Library staff were present to promote the summer reading program and to assist children in making a special fish art project.

Jazz Hall of Fame Visits the 'Nook

A piano player, saxophonist and bassist from the Jazz Hall of Fame visited Inglenook today. We got to listen to music and learn the roots of jazz and each of the songs they played!! I highly recommend this program for anyone and everyone. They will be at many other libraries in the coming week. Check the library's calender to find future dates, times and locations!

Come on! Let's be creative at the Birmingham Public Library this summer!

Dust off your paint brushes, gather up your pens, pencils, and crayons, find your tutu, pull out your camera and your ukulele and let your clever imagination run wild with all the possibilities you can dream up.

Kids from all over the Birmingham area will be clicking through this site looking for all sorts of fun and inventive stuff and summer reading suggestions.

Enjoy the crafts, web sites and other fun activities here, and be sure to bring your artistic self on down to your local library to join in the fun.
